Faces of the Fallen

Their names are Andrew, Anthony, Jose. Their portraits hang near Arlington National Cemetery, alongside those of 1,327 American soldiers killed in Afghanistan and Iraq. Created by 200 volunteer artists, the exhibition defies the official censorship that forbids showing the war dead. Jean-Paul Mari and Eyal Sivan met with the families of soldiers killed in combat, many of whom now question the justification for these wars. From the federal capital to the Black neighbourhoods of Philadelphia, from Wisconsin farms to the garrison towns of North Carolina, from a small parish in Virginia to the Arizona desert, the film captures their pain, their doubts and their anger, while sharing a little of their daily lives. A quiet journey into the heart of an unexpected America, torn between confusion, weariness and revolt.
